More about the new “G” Concept Sail!
The “G” Concept
The purpose of the “G” concept is to align (and realign) Hobie sailing products worldwide particularly for International Hobie Class and World Sailing status boats by using standardized materials, design and processes. This creates greater consistency across all IHCA fleets.
These H14 “G” sails are not a new design. They are a standardization of the existing approved class sails. To maintain our World Sailing approved status we are aligning our racing products with these official standards and we have made this a priority. This will better support future International and Hobie World Sailing championship events.
Saftey, Fit & Finish
Main Sail View Window: For several years ,the H14 has been sailed and raced with a trapeze. To improve safety and visibilty, we have added a main sail view window (missing from some years of production)
Tell-Tale Windows: H14 sails have varied over the years between 2 or 3 tell-tale windows (or none), sometimes placed in different panels. After reviewing sailor feedback, we settled on a consistent design featuring 3 tell-tale windows positioned in the panels most preferred by recreational sailors. This provides excellent visibility of sail trim and airflow for sailors of all levels
Sail Numbers and “H” Logo: sail number location and the size of the Hobie “H” logo have varied in the past; This is now standardized.
Batten Sail Luff Caps and Batten Angles:
Sail Luff Caps: We have worked with many sail luff cap suppliers over the years and for the past few years, primarily used the sailmaker’s option. For all International Hobie Class / World Sailing approved sails, we are now standardizing and only genuine Hobie sail luff caps will be used.
This ensures consistent brand quality, elimantes confusion with third-party knockoffs and provides what we believe is the best-preforming available. The Hobie sail luff cap features a flat leading edge that sits flush against the mast, offering superior protection for both the sail and mast.
Batten Pockets - Batten Angles: Over the years, batten angles have varied slightly when the 6-batten main sail was released in 1983. Similar to the adjustement made for the lower main panel view window, we have adopted a consisten position. Depending on the length of your current sail battens (which have varied over the years), you may need to adjust their lengths or purchase an additional batten.
Main Sail Luff Tapes: We have used various luff tapes on Hobie mainsails over the years. The 14G will now use the same Teflon-style tape that has been standard on most Hobie 16 sails for over 15 years. This upgrade significantly improves resistance to wear while making it easier and smoother to raise the sail. This teflon luff tape will be used on all approved International Hobie Class / World Sailing boats in the future.
Sail Tack Logos - Racing Classes: We have standardized the tack logo for all current and future World Sailing / IHCA approved sails. Racing logos will also be separated from recreational sailing logos, not done in the recent past.
